How to get and compare contractor quotes
A simple process for getting quotes you can actually compare, and the questions worth asking.

Describe the job the same way to everyone
Write down what you want done, which rooms or areas are included, and any materials you already have in mind. Give every contractor the same description so their quotes cover the same work.
Get at least three written quotes
Three quotes give you a sense of the normal range for your area. A quote far below the others may be leaving something out.
Questions worth asking
- Are you licensed and insured for this work in my state?
- Who will do the work, your own crew or subcontractors?
- Who pulls the permits and schedules inspections?
- What is included, and what would count as an extra?
- What is the payment schedule?
- What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
Be cautious with anyone who asks for a large payment up front in cash, pressures you to sign the same day, or will not put the quote in writing.
Check before you sign
Many states let you look up a contractor's license online. Read recent reviews, ask for references from similar jobs, and make sure the contract lists the scope, price, timeline and warranty.
